Prepping Your Hair for Summer

Don’t let this gloomy weather fool you! Summer is on the way and closer than you think. For most, this means a new hairdo. Maybe you want to go lighter and have your locks be sun kissed and golden. Or perhaps you’ve been growing your hair out all winter and are ready for a new edgy cut.

Spring is about re-birth, growth and change. As far as we’re concerned, summer is about flaunting that change. But there’s something else you should also consider for your hair when summer is around the corner, and that’s prepping it for the elements.

Summer is all about dips in the ocean and long lazy days in a swimming pool. There’s no better way to spend those hotter months! But let’s face it, the hot weather, bright sun and long hours in the water can do more than damage your hair. That’s why it’s so important to ready your hair for the summer along with that new do!

Trim It!

First things first, a haircut is a must (or a tiny trim). A nice trim before those hot months are upon us can help strengthen your hair and get rid of the already damaged ends. Healthy cuts lead to healthy looking hair.

Moisturize It!

You don’t want to forget to moisturize. I’m sure you’ve noticed how dry your skin can get in the summer? Well the same thing can happen to your hair. Protect and hydrate your hair this summer with a deep conditioning treatment like Keratage’s Nutritious Treatment Mask and a leave in conditioning spray like UNITE’s 7 Seconds Leave in Conditioner. Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner are also a great addition to keep your locks nourished and moisturized. Try TiGi’s Hydra-Synergy Shampoo and Conditioner for added moisture.

Embrace It!

Summer is about relaxation and going with the flow. The same goes for you hair. Invest in some products that will help you maintain your healthy hair with no fuss. We highly recommend UNITE’s Beach Day Texturizing salt spray. This spray is perfect for creating those effortless beachy waves or spraying on after a long day in the ocean for added texture and style. If your hair tends to get frizzy during the summer months, a relaxing serum is a must. Try Keratage’s Fortifying Leave-in Control Serum to help de-frizz and relax your hair. There’s no need to fight the elements when you can embrace them with these amazing products.

Hats And Hair Too!!

Hats & Hair Too!
There are some basic rules after you have found ‘Your” perfect hat, now you have to decide how to wear your hair with it. A hat portrays a style, it makes a statement and having the perfect “hair do” is what’s going to bring this look home for you. Basically, the hat will let you know what to do with your hair. A couple examples: a structured hat such as a “bowler” goes well with a more polished hairstyle like a sleek low ponytail, which tends to emphasize the jawline. On the other end, a hate like a fedora is worn most flattering with down, loose, wavy “70”s hair.
To avoid that hideous post-hat flatness, we suggest actually doing your hair before wearing your hat for the day! Sounds crazy, but what if you have to take it off!?! You need to be prepared to not have to rock the “hat head” look. Try flipping your hair in the opposite direction you usually wear it. If you have to take your hat off, just flip it back in the direction you usually wear it as this builds volume!
It’s apparent that wide- brim hats, amongst many other varieties have become the new fashion statement. They have pretty much taken over the whole scarf trend (not saying that scarfs aren’t great) but for years we have been using scarves to embellish our ensembles. You can wear them for so many reasons in any kind of weather to add a little personality to your style.
I know it’s hard for some of us not to be intimidated by wearing a hat; they can be a complicated accessory to pull off. Finding the right one for you and its purpose is the key to finding comfort in rockin’ a hat. First, deciding whether you are choosing to wear a hat for its functionality or to just add some pizazz to a day time outfit. If you’re not careful you can look like you’re trying too hard.
There are so many different kinds of hats…how do you choose? There are the wollen skull caps to keep us warm, the wide-brimmed straw version hats to shade us from the suns beating rays and of course the ever-so-effortless The ever so popular fedora is the perfect hat to take poolside or on vacation as it pairs perfectly with skinny jeans, bikinis and dresses! Whether any hat flatters you, is like everything else in fashion, it’s all about proportion!!!

Recover Your Hair After Hair Loss!

For both men and women, our hair is our security blanket. We view it as a defining piece of ourselves. We obsess about it looking its best and fear those ever so frustrating “bad hair days”. Hair not only is a physical attribute of ourselves, but it also tells  a lot about the type of person you are or are trying to portray. So, when we start losing our hair, it can be very traumatizing because it could feel like we are losing a piece of ourselves.

These days there are measures we can take to not only help prevent hair loss, but can actually stop hair loss, or even more, re-grow new hair! There are many tricks and tips we use in the salon when it comes to attending to our clients with balding/thinning and/or fine hair.

Here are some tips:

Make sure to take care of yourself by the inside first because it will definitely show on the outside. Following a healthy diet is crucial for maintaining healthy hair. Some vitamins and minerals that are crucial for healthy hair are vitamin B, Folate, Calcium & Biotin. Some foods that contain these vitamins are walnuts, spinach, eggs, bok choy, carrots and halibut. Try to include as many of these in your diet daily or find a good multi-vitamin to cover your bases.

Ask your hairdresser to recommend a good shampoo & conditioner that is not too heavy and won’t weigh your hair down. There are also shampoos and conditioners that will help stimulate the scalp to promote new hair growth. Brands that we love: DS Laboratories by Sweis Inc. and GO247 by UNITE in Mint thickening shampoo and conditioner.

The right haircut and style can give the illusion of thicker, fuller hair…If done right! We recommend  short chin or shoulder length bobs, side swept fringe, pixies, medium length bobs with stacked layering.

Hairdressers have to be extra cautious when it comes to applying color to fine or thinning hair because everything shows up more drastically, which could end up looking streaky or blotchy. Because hair process colors  quicker, it can lead to over processing. When adding contrast color to light hair,  go a level lighter than you like to avoid over processing.

Scalp makeup and hair thickeners have become really popular. Due to stressful lives we tend to lead these days, hair loss is a very prevalent reality. Products such as “colored power fibers” are being used to camouflage bald spots on the scalp by depositing a temporary color onto the surface of the scalp, blending in with your hair color. Powders are also being used to add volume to fine hair. Products that we recommend are: Expanda Dust by Unite and Style Edit Color Powder.

Today’s Hollywood Hair Rebels!

From the runways to red carpets or those stylish, girls walking the streets, we are seeing the “dorkiest” of hairstyles known in hair history make a “cool” comeback! Mullets, bowl cuts, comb-overs and micro- bangs are….gulp…the latest hot looks in hair trends this new year of 2015! Yes, the 80’s are back in full force!

These looks come across as edgy, sexy, slightly boyish and very flattering, especially on the bold and confident woman whom is the only type of woman to be able to pull off these new “cool” haircuts. These type of haircuts are inspiring hairdressers all over the world right now.

The traditional versions of these haircuts are being changed up a bit however. Bowl cuts are looking a little more shaggy, comb-overs are being used to emphasize a very heavy, dramatic side bang, and while the mullet is still the same short length in the front and long length in the back AKA: “business in the front, party in the back”! The two distinct lengths in this hairstyle is being brought more up-to-date by blending in the two different lengths to create a more soft, seamless look.

We are seeing all kinds of celebrities rocking these new haircuts. Rhianna is killing the fashion mullet, Micro bangs on Beyonce and Lena Dunham’s bowl cut was lightened to a platinum blonde color.

So what do you think? Are the 80’s going to be taking over this year of 2015?? I can honestly say I hope that this trend isn’t here to stay! But, you are also talking to a girl whose dad thought he could cut her hair as a baby. And yes, I was a toe-head with a Mohawk to a mullet to a bowl-cut with accidental micro-bangs from about 1987-1992. The pictures are pretty amazing however!

“Girls Who Barber…Barbetts” –MERRISA DALE

How Did You Get Started in this Biz?

“I started working in the industry at age 15 as a Receptionist. I enjoyed the salon atmosphere and its’ energy so much that I decided to go to Cosmetology School. I worked as an Assistant for a few years, then found my place as a Hairdresser at a men’s salon. I was confident enough to branch out and go find a new salon to work at as a Private Contractor and where my clients would feel comfortable coming to see me at their convenience. The transition from salons was almost seamless for both myself and my clients and I continue to successfully build to my clientele at the amazing Platino Salon&Suites Palace.”

How Did You Build Your Clientele?

“I worked at an upscale men’s salon for over 3 years trying to build a clientele. I’ve walked for miles and miles passing out my business cards, made myself available for any walk-in clients through a lot of patient waiting around the salon, did a lot of “complimentary work” dedicating myself to making men look and feel their very best! It wasn’t easy trying to make a name for myself and it definitely took a lot of time and patience. I teamed up with Platino Salon&Suites in their marketing strategy to market myself through their website with my very own “micro-site” and social media sites. I have even teamed up with “Groupon”, which was a one-time learning experience (at least for me). Through my work and “word of mouth”, I have obtained a great clientele and have gained the confidence to be able to do my best work, expand my skills and offer more services to my clients. This is what fuels my passion to being a great hairdresser.”
